Detailed Review
The Xbox Series S is an all-digital gaming console designed for players who want modern performance in a compact form factor. It eliminates the traditional disc drive entirely, focusing purely on digital downloads and streaming. Built around the custom 512GB NVMe solid-state drive and Xbox Velocity Architecture, it drastically cuts down waiting times at launch screens and throughout active gameplay.
Performance is smooth across supported titles, reaching frame rates up to 120 FPS alongside visual enhancements powered by DirectX Raytracing. The Quick Resume feature lets you suspend several games at once and jump back into action right where you left off, avoiding repetitive startup menus. The hardware also supports Smart Delivery, which automatically provides the optimal visual and performance version of supported games for the system.
Digital backward compatibility is a major strength, giving you access to thousands of titles spanning the original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and current-generation releases. The included wireless controller improves everyday handling with textured grips, a hybrid D-pad, and a dedicated Share button. You can also pair the hardware with Xbox Game Pass, sold separately, to access day-one releases, an extensive digital library, and cloud gaming.
Because this is a disc-free system, anyone with a physical media collection will not be able to use their game discs or DVD/Blu-ray media. Storage is set at 512GB on the internal drive, which holds the operating system alongside your installed digital library. Additionally, the included controller relies on two AA batteries out of the box rather than an integrated rechargeable pack.
Verdict: The Xbox Series S is an ideal choice for players who prioritize a fully digital library, fast SSD load times, and a compact living room setup. It suits anyone eager to explore a vast catalog of modern and classic games without physical discs.
